Diet Coke Nutrition Facts The Winner (Chapter 3).
Elizabeth would make him all that he should be, wrapping him around her finger and how she seemed to like the type who could be made to do as she pleased. John, all in all was a small town boy come to the big city; looking for what he could not get in that "hick town" of his and how he would admire her by giving her all she wanted. This while she would mold him to be the sort of man who would suit the image she wanted so desperately of the sophisticated uptown student. He naturally with his job and money would help her get to what she sought for herself and then once this was done she would leave him but that would be latter as she by then would have as she put it "bigger fish to fry".
Elizabeth between reading and planning let time go by to the point that she forget about her hunger or at least till John brought over the salad she had ordered which he placed in front of her. "Here is your meal, young lady and may you enjoy it, now if you will excuse me, I got to go clean up as soon we will be closing up." were the words she heard as she looked up and saw John and then the food. The sight added to the smell reminded her of how little she had eaten all day. "Okay but since you are not too busy tonight why don't you come over and talk to me about this book." Elizabeth replied as she held up the book she was reading. John laughed to himself as he could see again he was being asked for his help in writing another term paper which he on more than one occasion had been paid for by many a student from Elizabeth's school; who had left till the last moment what they should not have procrastinated on. "Sure, I will; besides I love that book. Listen just let me clean the stove and I'll be with you shortly." John replied as he went off.
Elizabeth knew she was hungry. This she had no doubts about and as she saw her hamburger with chili on it, she took to it in a way that almost finished this large burger in three bites. Her trying to eat it while it was still hot, given she was not really one who enjoyed meat when it was not. She found it strange how she enjoyed the taste of a hamburger with chili on it, as she had never been a big fan of American burgers but being that it was hot and fresh, made it just right. There is something about taking a bit of food when we have ignored our hunger that makes the mind feel how needy for nutrition the body was, which was the case with Elizabeth who was on her last bite of her hamburger when John came back and took a seat next to her at the counter. John said nothing as he sat next to her and picked up the book she had shown him. John laughed as he looked at her and started their conversation as they sat next to each other with "Crime and Punishment" between them while Elizabeth in the mean time took turns eating her salad and drinking her diet Coke.
-Well, I see you were hungry today, I hope you didn't eat it to fast to enjoy it.
-Yeah, I was hungry but can we get to the book? I am almost finished with it and I hope you can read my term paper on it and just tell me what you think. I will pay you the usual ten dollars, or so that is what I hear is your fee for looking over a term paper.
-Yeah, that's about right and tell me what do you think of Raskolnikow?
-What do I think of who? Oh, sorry that is the main character?
-Yes, that is who.
-Well, it is hard to say. In a way I kinda feel sorry for him because of the conditions he was living in but in a way I don't coz he did have a chance to make money by translating some work and didn't and then he goes out and kills two women. Ok, one was because she was at the wrong place at the wrong time but still and if you really think about it..... the woman, the pawn lady wasn't cheating him or anything like that but then again his poverty.
- Ok I see, you have been reading the book which is good and have something to say about it, Well, what's important is to describe the story; by telling the details of importance to the story and what they mean to you and by the way, I feel at the end the court is a little to lenient by giving him only eight years.
- I can't believe you went and told me the ending (with a laugh as their heads got closer, with Elizabeth putting her hand on John's lap, at first not even realizing it) well never mind I am going to read it just the same.
Perhaps encouraged by Elizabeth's hand on his leg or her presence so near to him as had been the night he had not been able to get out of his memory or his new found fortune which gave rise to his confidence, John grabbed Elizabeth's small hand. The one which she had placed on his lap and looked her in the eye, making Elizabeth of the idea that she would be kissed. It was not so much that she minded but she had not expected such a reaction, as she and John looked at each other in a loss for words. It being as if they had forgotten the subject of their conversation.
-Well, (both in mirth, still holding each other's hand) why don't you finish the book. I see you are close to the end and then I can help you write, your term paper and give some pointers. But now finish your salad young lady!
Speaking as he picked up the fork and placed a piece of lettuce in Elizabeth's willing mouth which opened to receive what she was being feed. After which Elizabeth took the fork from John's hand.
- I can do that myself, thank you just the same.
- Well, I just wanted to help out, and by the way I think you really got a good understanding of "Crime and Punishment.".
- Listen, I've just spend most of the day reading this book, so excuse me if I don't want to talk about it. (Elizabeth, speaking as she ate her salad)
- So what would you like to talk about? I got an idea, tell me how is your dancing going? I heard from one of your friends that you're quite a dancer.
- Ok, there is something I don't mind talking about, my dancing is going well, actually though I can't decided weather to go for classical or modern.
There was something in the air that evening between Elizabeth and John; perhaps it was the news that John would soon be rich or the fact that they were finally talking after a period of ignoring one another that brought back sentiments shared on what had almost been there night to make love. Elizabeth for her part saw that John did not think worse of her for what had happened between them which was what could be classified as unconsummated stirred up lust, leaving both of them with certain regret as to not only what had not occurred but a slight one as to what had. This was precisely how it had started between them; the way it was again coming about with both looking at each other as time neared closing. Smiles, laughs, hands around one another and above all looks that could not have made their message more clear with eyes that let the other see what was behind them. Elizabeth continued to eat her salad in a way that made her feel, shy about the way John was looking at her.
- But why don't you tell me what you're planning to do with all that money or haven't you thought about it yet?
- Well, actually I have thought about it. What I am going to with it is basically, nothing just put it in the bank or invest in something that would give me a yearly interest that I could more or less live on and then with my job that should give me enough to live well. (seeing the look of surprise on Elizabeth's face with some astonishment of his own) Look, I don't know how much I am going to get and remember or maybe you did not know that such money is seriously taxed and then if the sum is real big you don't get it all at once but through the course of time.
- I didn't know that, well about the taxes I knew but not that one did not get the whole sum right away. It doesn't really seem fair, does it? I mean they promise all that money and then you don't get it right away. I know if I had that much money I would go out shopping or maybe start a business.
- (laughing) Well, see that's the difference between us, you come from a rich family. I don't; you can go out and spend the whole bundle and know that your father will always have it to give to you, for what ever you want; like your education and what not. Me, on the other hand can't just start spending and you know what is funny about this?
- No, tell me. (Elizabeth speaking with some sarcasm in her voice, which John detected but ignored as he continued)
- There are people who win millions in the lottery and after some years end up having less than they did before. - You mean they spend the money and have nothing to show for it later?
- No, I mean worse.
- What could be worse than that?
- They have less money than they had before they won the lottery, (seeing a look of confusion on Elizabeth) see what happens is they feel like millionaires.
- Well aren't they?
- Yes, they are but they start spending even more than they have and they are getting, as they don't get the whole bundle right away so they start borrowing on it, and not to mention that they give up their jobs.
- But they don't need their jobs coz they got so much money.
- Well, see what happens when people stop working they not only stop making money but have more time to spend money and don't forget those friends, who are always just that as long as they can borrow or get something. Really, I read about a person who ended up with much less after having won the lottery. Of course, many years later than he had before because in the time he stopped working and he was a lawyer too, so he lost a lot of his clients and build up a lot of debts and now he is having a hard time getting back his job, since he hasn't practiced law in over 10 years.
- Wow, I never knew it could be like, that so you're saying this money could be a blessing or a curse? Depending on how you treat it.
- Yes, you got the idea, so that is why all I'm gonna do is get an apartment, at a good mortgage which is about the same amount I would be paying in rent and a car and that's it. Rest is going in the bank or in to an investment firm.
There will be no going crazy and shopping trips of gold watches and expensive vacations; just living well. All possible on interest, even if I can only get 5% a year and plus my salary as a teacher.
