Taking A Stand Against Cancer

Diet Coke Nutrition Facts Taking A Stand Against Cancer.

Out of all the things that can kill us, cancer is one of the leading causes of death around the world. As if that news is not depressing enough, statistics show that the number of deaths from cancer is rising. Every year, approximately 12.7 million people learn they have the disease and 7.6 million will die from one of the 200 known forms of cancer.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer predicts that by 2030, cancer will kill more than 13.2 million people a year. In 2008, it killed approximately half that number. Research shows that most of these deaths will occur in the poorer countries of the world.

I guess that's the bad news. Is there any good news?

Well, according to many research facilities, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO), the main cause of over 20 percent of breast cancers and colon cancers is inactivity. Additionally, 27 percent of diabetes cases (another killer) and 30 percent of heart disease cases (another major killer), can be attributed to the same cause.

According to the experts, of which I am NOT one, just an interested party, approximately a third of common cancer cases in the U.S., China, and Great Britain are preventable. The method of preventing them is simple. In fact, they are the lifestyle changes I call for again and again in articles and on my websites and blogs: more physical activity (exercise), and proper nutrition.

Why would people choose to expose themselves to highly increased risk of cancer?

Well, sometimes it is simply ignorance. I know it is hard to believe that there are people who do not know that exercise and good nutrition can help prevent cancer and many major health issues as well, but they do exist.

Maybe something I write or say will get to one of them. Even one is worth it.

Some simply do not believe.

Maybe I can turn one on to the concept of regular exercise and good eating habits. Again, even one is worth it.

Some know, believe, and just do not take the leap to change their lifestyle to decrease their risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other debilitating conditions.

Why?

Is it laziness? I don't know. I just know that I want to watch my grandkids grow up and don't want an oxygen tube up my nose or get around in a wheelchair, that someone else has to push because I'm too weak.

Is exercise hard?

Not really.

You begin exercising at a level you can perform and sustain...and don't stop. Gradually, you increase what you do, but stay within your abilities.

Is proper nutrition hard?

Not really.

You know that an apple is better than apple pie. You have heard for years how you should eat. Maybe your choices will not be perfect, but you know that there are changes that you can make to your eating habits which will work to make you a healthier person.

However, be honest.

I used to manage a Dairy Queen in Austin, Texas. We used to laugh at the people who would come in and order a meal full of fat and then ask for a Diet Coke. Get real. You cannot always eat everything you would like to eat, but you can eat everything you like to eat sometimes if you regularly eat the way you should and exercise regularly.

Cancer is scary, but not as scary as it was when I was a kid. I know that I can cut my odds of falling victim to this dread disease by sticking with the exercises I do regularly and paying a little attention to what I eat.

So can you.
